Yang Wood and Yang Metal Compatibility in Saju: Tree and Sword

The Sword trims the Tree, and the Tree stands taller for it, as long as the cuts are fair.

In the five elements, metal cuts wood. Yang Metal, the Sword, is blunt, decisive and allergic to anything fake. Yang Wood, the Tree, is principled and proud of it. Each sees the other as a worthy opponent. The Sword respects the Tree for not caving; the Tree respects the Sword for telling the truth while everyone else is being polite. Arguments between you can feel like a good workout.

An axe and a tree are still an axe and a tree. The Sword gives feedback the Tree didn’t ask for, at the worst moment, in front of people. The Tree hears criticism of its choices as criticism of its values and digs in harder. Once both of you decide you’re right, the fights stop being about the dishes and start being about who gets to win.

The good version of this pair is a gardener and an orchard: pruning that makes the Tree bear more fruit. The Sword can cut in private, one branch at a time, and say what it admires before what it would change. The Tree can treat the Sword’s honesty as an offer it’s free to take or leave. Agree on a few topics that stay off the chopping block for good.

Sword, for every piece of criticism, name one specific thing the Tree did well that same week.
