The 10 day masters
In saju, your day master is the element you were born on: the top character of your day pillar. It’s the part of your chart that stands for you. There are ten, each one an element with a yang (outward) or yin (inward) side. Find yours below, or enter your birthday and we’ll tell you.
- Yang WoodThe TreeIf your day master is Yang Wood (甲, jia in Chinese, gap in Korean), saju pictures you as a tall tree. You grow in one direction, and you keep growing whether anyone is watching or not. Friends lean on you without asking. You’d rather be right than popular, and you’re patient in a way that looks like stubbornness from the outside. Things built around you tend to last, because you were never in a hurry to finish them.
- Yin WoodThe FlowerA Yin Wood day master (乙, yi in Chinese, eul in Korean) is the flower, the vine and the ivy on the wall. You don’t push through obstacles. You find the gap and grow through it. People underestimate you because you’re soft-spoken and easy to be around, and then they notice you’ve ended up exactly where you wanted. You read people fast, you adapt without losing yourself, and you’re almost impossible to uproot.
- Yang FireThe SunWith a Yang Fire day master (丙, bing in Chinese, byeong in Korean), you’re the sun of your own chart. You walk into a room and it gets warmer. You give attention freely, you say what you think, and you can’t hide a feeling to save your life. People come to you to feel better, and they usually do. Your moods pass fast, your enthusiasm is contagious, and your patience runs out sooner than you’d like to admit.
- Yin FireThe CandleA Yin Fire day master (丁, ding in Chinese, jeong in Korean) isn’t the sun. It’s the candle in the window, the desk lamp at midnight, the light someone leaves on for you. Your warmth is narrow and deep. You give it to a few people, and you give them all of it. You notice small things and remember them for years. You think more than you say, and when you do speak, people tend to listen.
- Yang EarthThe MountainIf you’re a Yang Earth day master (戊, wu in Chinese, mu in Korean), saju sees you as a mountain. You’re the one who doesn’t move when everything else does. Calm under pressure, slow to trust, impossible to rush. People bring you their secrets because you never turn the conversation back to yourself. Your friends might not know everything you’re feeling, but they always know where to find you.
- Yin EarthThe FieldA Yin Earth day master (己, ji in Chinese, gi in Korean) is a field: soft, rich soil that makes things grow. Ideas, people, half-finished plans all start to sprout once they land with you. You’re practical and caring, the friend who brings soup and also fixes the Wi-Fi. You’re modest about how much you do, and you quietly worry about whether everyone’s okay, often more than they worry about themselves.
- Yang MetalThe SwordA Yang Metal day master (庚, geng in Chinese, gyeong in Korean) is raw steel, the sword before and after the forge. You’re sharp, direct and allergic to anything fake. You say what everyone else in the meeting was only thinking. You decide quickly and stick with it. Under the edge there’s an unusually fierce sense of fairness, and a loyalty that makes you the first person your friends call when something has gone badly wrong.
- Yin MetalThe JewelWith a Yin Metal day master (辛, xin in Chinese, sin in Korean), you’re the jewel: refined, a little particular, and harder on yourself than anyone else could ever be. You have taste and you know it. You notice the crooked frame, the off note, the font that’s slightly wrong. You care about doing things well and being seen clearly. And you tend to shine brightest after something hard has done the polishing.
- Yang WaterThe OceanA Yang Water day master (壬, ren in Chinese, im in Korean) is the ocean, or a wide river on its way there. You’re big, restless and hard to contain. You need room to move: new cities, new ideas, new people. You get bored fast and you’re honest about it. But when something does hold your interest, you go deeper into it than almost anyone, and you see the whole picture while others are still looking at the pieces.
- Yin WaterThe RainIf your day master is Yin Water (癸, gui in Chinese, gye in Korean), saju pictures you as rain, mist or morning dew. Quiet, gentle, and somehow everywhere at once. You feel what people feel before they say it. You have a rich inner world and a vivid imagination, and you keep most of both to yourself. Under the softness, you’re far more strategic than anyone gives you credit for.
Your day master comes from the day you were born, not the year. Enter your birthday and we’ll work it out.
