Your birth-year animal

Rabbit

But that’s only your birth year. Your real animal is hiding in the day you were born.

Free. No sign-up. We don’t store your birthday.

What the calculator shows you

  • The Four Pillars

Saju means “four pillars.” The year, month, day and hour you were born each turn into a pair of characters, one stacked on the other. Eight characters in all. That’s your chart.

  • Your day master

The top character of your day pillar. Saju treats it as you, the person standing in the middle of the chart. Everything else gets read by how it treats your day master.

  • The five elements

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each of your eight characters belongs to one. Count them up and you can see what you have plenty of and what you’re running short on.

  • Your 10-year chapters

Saju splits a life into chapters about ten years long, called daeun in Korean. Each chapter leans on a different element, which is one way to explain why some decades feel easier than others.

How it works

  1. 01Enter your birth dateUse the date on your birth certificate. We handle the conversion, including the saju new year, which starts in early February, not on January 1.
  2. 02Add your birth time if you have itThe hour pillar needs it. No time? You still get six of your eight characters, and your day master stays the same.
  3. 03Read your chartYou see your day master, your saju type and your element balance, each with a short explanation in plain English.

Questions about the saju calculator

Is this saju calculator free?+

Yes. Your chart, your day master and your type are free. If you want a longer written reading, there’s one available, but you don’t need it to see your chart.

What’s the difference between saju and bazi?+

It’s the same system with two names. Bazi (八字, “eight characters”) is the Chinese name and saju (四柱, “four pillars”) is the Korean one. The calculation is identical. What changes from one tradition to the other, and from one reader to the next, is the style of interpretation.

What if I don’t know my birth time?+

Leave it blank. You’ll get the year, month and day pillars, and your day master doesn’t depend on the hour. If you can ask a parent or find a hospital record, the hour pillar adds detail about your private life and later years.

Does my birthplace or time zone matter?+

Enter the local clock time where you were born. Saju days run in two-hour blocks, so if you were born within about half an hour of a block changing, your hour pillar could land either way. Your day master is very rarely affected.

Is saju the same as the Chinese zodiac?+

No. Your zodiac animal is just one of your eight characters, the bottom half of your year pillar. Saju reads all eight and gives the most weight to the day you were born, not the year.

Can saju predict my future?+

Nobody can promise that. Saju describes tendencies and timing, and we offer it for fun and self-reflection. Please don’t use it to make medical, legal or financial decisions.
