Yang Wood and Yang Earth Compatibility in Saju: Tree and Mountain
The Tree grows into the Mountain and pushes it to change; the Mountain decides how much.
In saju, wood presses on earth, the way roots work into a rocky slope. Yang Wood, the Tree, has opinions and a direction. Yang Earth, the Mountain, is calm, patient, and very hard to move. The Tree is drawn to the Mountain’s steadiness, and the Mountain, often settled in a comfortable routine, finds the Tree’s push oddly refreshing. Plenty of Mountains say a Tree was the one who finally got them to apply for that job.
Pressure feels good until it doesn’t. The Tree can treat the Mountain like a project, nudging about health, career and friendships, while the Mountain says nothing and keeps score. Mountains go silent instead of fighting, and the Tree reads silence as agreement. Months later the Mountain simply refuses to budge on something, and the Tree has no idea where the wall came from.
The fix is for the Tree to ask before pushing, and to pick one change at a time instead of five. The Mountain has to say "no" out loud when it means no, not just go still. When the Tree respects the Mountain’s pace, the Mountain gives back something rare: a place where the Tree can stop growing for an afternoon and simply rest in the shade.
